Scam Phone Calls
We
have received notification that scam phone calls are being made in this
area in an attempt to trick people into providing their ATM card and
PIN numbers. The call may be from an "unknown number" and sounds like a
recording, informing you that your card will be blocked unless you
input your information. These are random calls. They do not identify
you or your financial institution and they should not be trusted.
JACFCU would like to take this opportunity to remind you:
We will NEVER ask for your PIN number!
It's your Personal Identification Number
and only someone who wants to steal from you would ask for it!
Keep your information safe:
- Do Not respond to phone calls which urge you to provide your information.
- Do Not input your card number or PIN unless you initiated the transaction.
- Do Not write your PIN on your card or keep them together in your wallet.
DO ask for verification.
You can always hang up and call us!
Beware of Charity Scams
It's a terrible fact: Scam artists disguised as charities are looking
to make money from your sympathetic wallet. It happens through e-mail,
telephone calls, and even knocks at the door.
Some recent scam-related e-mails ask for assistance for emergency
relief funds or victims' survivor funds and direct recipients to
contribute money to the American Red Cross through scammers' Web sites.
But the link actually leads to a Web site that isn't associated with
the Red Cross.
JACFCU offers these tips to ensure your donations go to the right cause:
* Ask lots of questions. How much of your contribution goes to victims
and how much goes to administration? Who does this contribution assist?
* Don't be pressured to make an immediate commitment. "Deadlines" are a
characteristic of a scam. Telephone scammers are good at sounding
believable, even when they're lying, so don't rush.
* Ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer
or "charity".
* Verify the solicitor's identity by asking for--and calling or
writing--the organization's headquarters. Contact your local charity
office or the Better Business Bureau to confirm validity.
* Don't give credit card information over the telephone or online
unless you placed the call to an organization you already trust.
* Send a check, never cash, and make it out to the organization, not
the individual collecting the donation.
* Contact local authorities or the FBI if you can't verify an
organization or if you're suspicious of the solicitation.

Consumers Pay More for Rent-to-Own
Do you really need that new stereo you've been eyeing? You can't afford
it, but you want it so bad you're considering purchasing it at one of
those rent-to-own places down the street.
Think again if you think this deal is just like paying cash.
In the long run, rent-to-own chains typically charge almost double the
price for items than if you purchase them with cash. This is because
interest rates the chains charge are often near 40%, according to
MoneyCentral.
The rent-to-own business is more than 40 years old and generates about
$4.4 billion in revenues, serving nearly three million customers.
Before venturing into a rent-to-own agreement consider:
* Delaying the purchase until you've saved enough to pay cash.
* Purchasing the item with a low-rate credit card.
* Getting a short-term loan from JACFCU to purchase the item.
* Buying the item on an installment plan or layaway plan.
* Purchasing a used version of the item from a second-hand store or at
a yard or garage sale.
